Nestled within the historic Castello del Calcione, this equestrian stay is designed for those who wish to explore the region’s rich history and scenic beauty on horse back combined with wine or olive oil tastings, art visits or even truffle hunting (depending on the season) offering a perfect balance of nature, adventure, and relaxation.
The horses are bred on the estate and are mostly thoroughbreds and anglo-arabs with a taste for gallop..!
Meet the Host
Passionate about horses and currently training as the only woman to compete in the prestigious Palio di Siena, Selvaggia and her family have proudly owned and lived on this magnificent estate since its founding in 1483.
As the head of the Scuderia, Selvaggia is eager to share her deep love for horses and the enchanting Tuscan countryside. She invites you on an extraordinary three-day journey on horseback, exploring scenic forests, charming ancient villages, and picturesque olive groves, all while immersing yourself in the timeless beauty of Tuscany.

ITINERARY - 3 DAYS
Day 1: Fabbriche and Lucignano
Breakfast at the castle followed by a 10:30 departure from the stables with a stop for a picnic or wine tasting. The afternoon is spent exploring the medieval village of Lucignano with a coffee break at a local bar before returning to the castle.
About 4 hours riding.
Day 2: Modanella and Rigomagno
Enjoy breakfast at the castle before departing around 10:00. Ride through the scenic hills, visiting Modanella’s Castle and the medieval village of Rigomagno, with a delightful picnic along the way. Afternoon: Return to the castle for a relaxing end to the day.
About 4 hours riding.
Day 3: Calcione Estate
The day begins with a 2-hour morning ride around the estate, featuring opportunities for galloping through picturesque spots, followed by a delightful midday lunch back at the castle, and concludes with heartfelt farewells and departure in the afternoon.

The Calcione Estate is located in the heart of Tuscany, 40mn car ride from Siena.

Flight to Florence. Car ride from the airport to the Estate about 1h20mn.

THE HORSES
Castello del Calcione has always been home to many horses, mostly Thoroughbreds and Anglo-Arab.
Traditionally bred for racing the Palio di Siena, these horses combine speed, endurance and stamina making them the perfect companion for your long daily rides.
The Estate benefits from its own Gallop Track for the “Scuderia” training race horses for the Palio happening twice a year in July and August.
ACCOMODATION
This enchanting castle features 11 comfortably appointed double bedrooms blenfing classic Toscan design with modern comfort. Spread across two floors, each of them offer stunning views of the castle’s tranquil gardens.
Find your way to one of the cosy and elegant reception room to relax and enjoy an aperitivo after a long day riding. Maybe take a dip to refresh in the swimming pool just accross the garden or go venture into one of the stunning lakes of the estate.
The professional chef will delight your senses with the most delicious breakfasts, lunches or dinners served between the courtyard, the scenics gardens and the beautiful dining room.
